Taking a deep breath as I climbed out of my car, I made sure to grab the bouquet of flowers I had picked up for Lila. I couldn’t take my eyes off the yellows and greens blended together in the plastic wrapping. I didn’t know if I was ever going to be able to thank Rose enough for the beautiful arrangement of sunflowers she created for Lila at the last possible minute or Patty for the suggestion. I swear I didn’t know how I survived without that woman. Patty was more than my best friend. She was my right hand. She had been by my side for as long as I could remember and I didn’t know what I would do without her. Looking up at Lila’s house, my heart skipped a beat. I couldn’t believe that I was about to take this amazing woman to dinner. I had waited for what felt like a lifetime to have this opportunity with the girl who had stolen my heart back when we were kids. I knew she was hurting right now but I also knew that I was the perfect man to put her heart back together again.

Ring…Ring…Ring!

My hand reached into my back pocket and grabbed my cell phone. Looking at the unfamiliar number, I sent up a silent prayer that it wasn’t Lila on the other end. I don’t think I would recover if she cancelled our date. “Hello?” I questioned timidly. My hand holding the flowers started to shake and I had to will myself to calm down.

“This wasn’t part of the deal!” a voice growled on the other end of the call, causing the fine hairs on the back of my next to stand at attention. I had clearly pissed someone off today.

“Excuse me?” I challenged. “Who the hell is this?” My eyes did a quick sweep of my surroundings to make sure nothing was out of the ordinary. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Lila pass the sheer curtains in the living room headed towards the front door.

“All you were supposed to do was deliver the letter and go about your day. This isn’t your chance to move in on my wife!”

“Noah?” I asked, needing to make sure my ears weren’t playing tricks on me and I was talking to who I thought I was. Who the hell did this guy think he was?

“No shit!” he spit out at me. The anger in his voice was evident and I couldn’t stop the smile from pulling at my lips.

“Hi Javon!” Lila called out as the front door swung open. She was a vision in the off-the- shoulder, light purple top and jeans that hugged her in all the right places.

Disconnecting the call without a second thought, I returned the phone to my pocket and made my way to her side. “You are stunning.”

“Thank you,” she said as her hand went up to smooth a piece of hair that escaped the perfect bun on the top of her head.
